EVERY afternoon, as they were coming from school, the children used to go and play in the Giant's garden. It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass. Here and there over the grass stood beautiful flowers like stars, and there were twelve peach-trees that in the spring-time broke out into delicate blossoms of pink and pearl, and in the autumn bore rich fruit. The birds sat on the trees and sang so sweetly that the children used to stop their games in order to listen to them. He had been to visit his friend the Cornish ogre, and had stayed with him for seven years. After the seven years were over he had said all that he had to say, for his conversation was limited, and he determined to return to his own castle.

See update 3. The Portrait of Mr. These will be restored in a future update. For easier navigation, there are tables of contents for each section and one for the whole volume. At the end of each text there are links bringing you back to the respective contents tables.
I have also added an alphabetical index for the poems and a combined one for all the essays, lectures, articles, and reviews. As I already mentioned, some of the poems are missing and will be restored in the future.

An Ideal Husband Oscar Wilde. High above the city, on a tall column, stood the statue of the Happy Prince. He was gilded all over with thin leaves of fine gold, for eyes he had two bright sapphires, and a large red ruby glowed on his sword-hilt.
He was very much admired indeed.
One night there flew over the city a little Swallow. His friends had gone away to Egypt six weeks before, but he had stayed behind, for he was in love with the most beautiful Reed. He had met her early in the spring as he was flying down the river after a big yellow moth, and had been so attracted by her slender waist that he had stopped to talk to her. So he flew round and round her, touching the water with his wings, and making silver ripples.
This was his courtship, and it lasted all through the summer. Then, when the autumn came they all flew away. After they had gone he felt lonely, and began to tire of his lady-love.
All day long he flew, and at night-time he arrived at the city.
