Sort order. Jan 31, J. Brister rated it did not like it Shelves: Game Over is a stand-alone novel by English author, Adele Parks. Be careful about picking this book up. It sounds much better in the blurb than the actual book is. Jocasta "Cas" Perry is a TV producer who wants nothing to do with love. She prefers one-night stands and casual sex. She even creates a reality show called "Sex With an Ex," in which people in the show are encouraged to cheat on their significant others.

Of course, she ends up getting herself into some trouble when she finally does fi Game Over is a stand-alone novel by English author, Adele Parks. Of course, she ends up getting herself into some trouble when she finally does find a man she wants to be with I did not like Cas at all. I really could not stand her, and I found that she really had no redeeming qualities.

I mean, she knowingly sleeps with men who are married. Now, Darren Smith, he is a much better character, who is the complete opposite of Cas. He represents marriage, fidelity, and love. Honestly, I am not sure what category this novel is supposed to fall in.

The blurb that made me pick this book up made it sound more like a contemporary romance. I found it more annoying than anything else. I really would say skip this one. There's not a lot of redeeming qualities about it, including the slow pacing and the horrid character of Cas.

Jan 03, Angela rated it it was ok Shelves: This book hit a little too close to home for my tastes, and yet I find the ending completely unbelievable. Normally I'm not a fan of epilogues, but in this case, I think one was needed. Love doesn't make the world go round, and I kind of resent the implication it does. What happened with Josh a few months or years down the road, did she patch things up fully with Issie, what about a job, if the show continues being a hit or if the people of Britain start boycotting it because of the despicable topic.

It wasn't a bad book, per se. I didn't really like Cas and her friends, and that could entirely be I don't agree with their lifestyles. Especially Cas's. Her complaining men cheat and then helping them cheat continuously doesn't make her right. They might never have cheated if she hadn't thrown herself at them. I don't know if I'll read other books by Adele Parks. I'll check the summary first, but if all them involve plots similar to this, I'll pass. I'm already too cynical towards love to read about high divorce rates and adultery.

It was nice to have a main character with brains and work ethic. Sure, her behavior was reprehensible, but following the Hallmark nature of this plot, I figure it would predictably wrap up with some gush about true love overcoming bad morals. I even didn't mind that it took over a pages for the main dude to show up.

He seemed dreamy enough Until he decided to sleep with her. Our brainy girl goes gaga. Her cocky, self-aware attitude disappears. Now her entire character change centers on one, stupid man. And it did not get any better as it wrapped up.

I didn't expect much from this book but I liked the writing. I liked the British chick flick without the TMI. Okay, it was sort of TMI. First half was good So terrible it ruined the good part. Which is a bummer. And also, just because it needs to be repeated, you can't marry a man you just met. I found the main character Cas vile to be honest, and at no point did she redeem herself although im sure that was the intention Her behaviour was horrid, selfish, shallow and frustrating from start to finish therefore when her world started unraveling i felt nothing, other than the hope that this book would be over soon.

I really like Adele Parks and find her novels gripping, fairly light hearted but often with a serious edge. This book was strange in that the main character was completely horrible but this did not make the book any less enjoyable. I think the reality TV show that Cas produced seemed just like the sort of thing we would see on our screens and Cas's friends were also quite convincingly portrayed.

At the risk of sounding a bit prudish, sometimes Adele Parks' sex scenes are a bit OTT just somethin I really like Adele Parks and find her novels gripping, fairly light hearted but often with a serious edge.

At the risk of sounding a bit prudish, sometimes Adele Parks' sex scenes are a bit OTT just something about the way they're written is a bit "cringey" and I was also mildly irritated that the main character ended up with the lovely, kind hearted leading man.

I'm hoping this wouldn't happen in real life, because she was truly vile and didn't deserve him - despite all the 'reasons' given through the book about why she behaved as she did. Looking forward to my next book by Adele! May 07, Myriam rated it did not like it. I started this book not knowing it was Chick Lit. I liked the media setting but I soon realized this wasn't going to be my cup of tea.

Jul 10, Mikayla Gray rated it did not like it Shelves: Game Over is pretty harmless chick lit fare for the most part.

Jocasta is a thoroughly nasty piece of work. Newsflash, parents get divorced. The fact that the au Game Over is pretty harmless chick lit fare for the most part. Of course, this all works out, despite Jocasta crapping all over the only two friends she somehow has in the process. If the author was going for a nice guys finish last message and doubled down on her ruthless main character treating people like dirt and still walking away with her self-belief, along with riches and success it afforded her, this book would have been downright brilliant.

I'm usually a fan of Adele Parks' books, but I'd advise even fans to give this one a miss. Feb 14, Anna rated it liked it. Sex with an ex. The programme trials partners must before their marriage to see if they would be tempted by an ex. The only ex who says no is Darren who Cas falls in love with but as she has issues with commitment she sort of dumps him. Josh is heartbroken, she is a laughing stock. Mar 20, Smriti Brar rated it liked it. The book held my interest from the beginning and seemed to offer something a bit different from the usual love stories.

But the end was a bit abrupt. I feel there was a need to explain about what happens Cas's relationship with the other central characters including Josh, Issie and her mother. I'm actually a bit disappointed. Aug 13, Rachel Shepley rated it really liked it. Easy book to read with a bit of a twist.

Aug 16, Yasmine Azeez rated it it was amazing. Dopo tre o quattro termini volgari di troppo, abbandono la nave. Jul 28, Di rated it really liked it. Cas is a character within this book which you are either going to love or hate in probably equal measure.

Cas hits upon an idea, an idea that will solve everything - a programme which relies on the general public turning up and watching a couple on the brink of marriage and whether they would ever be tempted one last time with an ex. It has elements of every reality tv show you can think of in there - and I think this book reflects the sudden fascination we have sitting on our sofas at home and watching other people's lives fall apart.

Cas thinks she is onto a winner, and this will enhance her career even further - it's all she wants because she knows that no one can resist.

But then Cas, who uses men as a hobby and manipulates them purely for her own need suddenly meets Darren and she cannot convince him to be part of the television show which is sweeping the nation, and causing the wedding industry to take a financial hit. Darren has something that Cas does not - morals and principles. Cas is convinced that Darren will be easily swayed and sets out to prove something to everyone and herself.

How wrong Cas is! And finally just when you think that actually you could hate Cas no more, she suddenly has a side to her that makes you think that all that hurt and bottled up anger and bitterness about the male sex, is just a front, is a protection against the one thing she cannot control - falling in love. Sorry Cas, it looks like it is Game Over for you in this instance. This is a great escapism read, that actually might hit on a reflection of they type of television programmes we watch and actually fill our schedules night after night.

It was that which made me cringe slightly, and think how low can the entertainment business go to get viewing figures and reputations. This novel I think reflects that very well, under a basic girl and boy fall in love story, she just makes it that little bit more difficult for Cas but not for Darren, who I happily fell in love, because of his morals and his principles!

Mar 20, Amanda rated it liked it Shelves: So this book was OK. Then she meets someone who refuses to be on the show and falls in love with him, even though she is u SORRY!!!

Then she meets someone who refuses to be on the show and falls in love with him, even though she is uncapable of experiencing love because of abandonment issues regarding her father. She flees the relationship and makes plans to marry her safe best friend, who loves her more than she loves him and is, therefore, not a threat. Good guy assumes she was involved and ditches her. She pines for him and they are eventually and really abruptly reunited. The end. What I dislike about this story is that it confirms the stereotypical picture of women — they can either be competent, powerful and good at their jobs OR they can be warm.

Even though men can be both. Of course, why would I expect chick lit to fight stereotypes? I do like the cheeky British humour and slang. View all 4 comments. Apr 23, Carly rated it it was ok. Slightly disappointed with Game over after reading About last night my first Adele Parks book which I loved from cover to cover this one just wasn't close to being as good.

This said I don't think many will come close to be as good. However and quite importantly I don't wanna say it was bad as have read many that have been so much worse! I felt that it was longer than it needed to be and slow in some parts and not helped by the dislike I had for the character Cas, the sort if person that id not have in my life and yet the world is sadly full of them.

Also it was too close to a nerve for me with a absent father theme. What happened for Josh, did they manage to repair the life long friendship at all? How did Darren's family react towards her? Cas Perry doesn't want a relationship. When her father walked out on her and her mother she decided relationships, love, marriage, the whole shegang, simlpy weren't worth the heartache.

But is Cas, immoral most of the time and amoral when it comes to business, going too far with her new TV programme, Sex with an Ex? Unfeeling and unscrupulous, she ruthlessly manipulates everyone she comes into contact with. Until she meets Darren.

Jocasta "Cas" Perry, a producer for an up and coming London network, she's been given the task of coming up with a program to boost ratings.

Cocktails with friends results in a brilliant idea for a show - "Sex With an Ex," whereby about to be married couples have their relationship tested by temptation with a former lover.

Her concept works a little too good, as ratings go through the roof. She meets a possible "ex" named Darren. He's intelligent, sexy, and very engaging, and she is very attracted, knowing that the entire English population will fall for him thus a ratings bonanza. He declines the show citing that it's a blight on relationships and wants no part of it. To change his mind and chip away at his strong morals, she hangs out with him and his family for a few days, fighting her attraction to him.

She'll leave no stone unturned in order to change his mind, and tells him so, but he stands his ground. No doubt about it - Darren is a dream come true; he's not afraid to show his feelings or stand up for what he believes in, including the happily ever after that Cas is so strongly opposed to.

Suddenly, ice-hearted Cas is finding herself in unchartered territory - she's falling in love with Darren. Her reaction to their mutual feelings is what takes the rest of the story on a roller coaster ride, as she immediately reverts to her old, selfish ways, and is confronted with her past misdeeds in the most publically humiliating way. Although it's hard to find any redeeming qualities in Cas "bag em; shag em; and send em packing" , if you stick with it, you'll be rewarded with a very fascinating story, as like the "Grinch," Cas' heart grows two sizes by the end.

It's amazing that someone like him would even bother with a gal like her.

She's constantly nasty to him - any other guy would just leave, not wanting to be just another notch on her bedpost. Be sure to also check out the author's notes in the back.

She has the mandatory best friends Josh and Issie, Josh being as cynical as she is towards love relationships, Issie being the big romantic. Cas' new idea for a show is about testing the engaged couple's faithfulness. When a great candidate for the show turns down the opportunity to appear on TV, she decides to insist, in part because the candidate is hot.

It's hard to say anymore without spoiling the story, so I won't. Just know that the ruthlessness of backstage TV is worth reading the novel in itself! For the rest, it's definitely not your typical love story - as usual though with this type of book, my only complaint is with the ending a bit predictable, a bit theatrical. Except for that I really enjoyed the whole story a lot.
