My daughter loves Nancy especially because she has curly hair and is a ballet dancer just like my daughter. See, My daughter is nearly 4 and totally understands this book fine. But I think understanding it is the problem. It's a sweet story idea but the problem I have is when the girls fight, how they talk to each other. It's pretty hard to explain why one girl yells at another one to leave her house and that she refuses to place any more.
And one saying that she will never come back. My daughter is now under the assumption that when she quarrels with anyone she can tell them to leave and never come back and she doesn't want to know them any more.
It was funny at first but it's a nasty habit all from reading the book ONE time. As a parent I really value respectful kind behavior to everyone and really try and drive home respecting friends, elders, siblings, and everyone so I felt like maybe this made my daughter thing being disrespectful was ok. So, I had to give the book to the library for some one else that's maybe older to enjoy.
I have a dozen fancy Nancy books though and all of them are fantastic and so sweet. The writer is so clever and fun with her ideas and point of view of Nancy. I'll definitely be downloading more Nancy books, just this one was off the mark for me. The message is sweet in the end, but the way the girls talk to each other is not the best influence on other children reading or being read to. I don't want my children talking that way so I changed the script a little bit to more of an innocent frustration with each other.
Very cute illustrations and the French words are nice for them to learn.
I have a policy that I don't let my young children watch or read anything without my approval which means I have to watch or read it first. I didn't know about these books when my friend first introduced me to them. I thought they were just a bunch of cutesy fluff. I'm glad I gave them a chance. My daughters adore Fancy Nancy! This is actually only the second book we've bought but we want more!
This particular book is about two friends learning to share a special tea set and more importantly learning to reconcile and forgive and still be friends after both acted selfishly. What's more, these books teach vocabulary in a fun and memorable way because it's written right into the story which I'm hoping will encourage their love of words.
Of course, all my daughters notice is the cute dress up clothes and tea party, not knowing that they're also learning how to be a good friend. My little one has me read this to her every day - yup, it's THAT book.
She now wants a tea party birthday. Side note- we got the other tea party Fancy Nancy book too The story in this book is not what I expected. I do not like Lil Nancy's bratty behavior and refuse to read it to my daughter. She has enough diva behavior on her own. However, I do like how they apologize This very quickly became one of my two daughters' favorite books ages 2 and 4, and very fancy in their own right. I am new to the Fancy Nancy series but I am totally hooked.
The tea set breaks, and both girls are upset. Nancy's parents encourage her to apologize, and all is right in the end. It's a great story about friendship, sharing, and taking responsibility.
