Jun 06, Matt rated it really liked it. As much as I'd love to, I couldn't quite give this book 5 stars. The first few chapters are beautifully written and illustrated but some of the later stuff is much more dry though equally as fascinating in some respects. I'd need to give the chapters on music onward another read to truly appreciate it I think. Still, it's overall an astounding book, highly recommend it to anyone with a general interest in philosophy, science, or music.

Sep 09, Amanda Pearl rated it really liked it. An incredibly fun, well illustrated and densely packed read. Anyone will enjoy, but this isn't for the faint of heart; there's a lot of information packed into these pages and sometimes you'll want to reread the same section or go back to a previous chapter to refresh your memory. A wonderful look at the classical arts - geometry, arithmetic, music and cosmology, Quadrivium connects dots and expounds on the math and beauty constantly swimming in our world's ether.

Can I give this more than 5 stars?? There was a whole hell of a lot I did not understand, but I am more than ready, willing and able to delve into more of this author's work.

Jun 05, Aaron Cummings rated it it was amazing. I thought I had received a classical education. Then I found this book Nov 12, Josiah rated it really liked it Shelves: Fascinating book on the Quadrivium. I learned a lot from it. At times the book went beyond my ability to understand it particularly in the geometry and music sections , but it was accessible for the most part. The biggest thing I gained from this, however, was not specific knowledge about the Quadrivium, but a better grasp on the larger point of the Quadrivium and how the Quadrivium is meant to be viewed or: At the end of th Fascinating book on the Quadrivium.

At the end of the day, it's more of a "here's a bunch of cool facts about the Quadrivium" book than anything else.

Quadrivium: The Four Classical Liberal Arts of Number, Geometry, Music, & Cosmology

But boy are the facts cool. And boy does it do a good job of using the facts to reveal a mindset, and not just present facts for facts' sake.

Aug 08, Niklas Spitz rated it it was amazing. Aside from the content, what strikes me about this edition, is the quality of the print, elegant graphics, paper and binding. This volume is in itself an understated classic and feels wonderful to hold and behold not the case for most other publications I find today. Very readable in bite sized chunks, where I have found other books on sacred geometry and number to be a little arcane or inscrutable.

This is progressively working it's way from 1st principles to the dynamic poetry of the music o Aside from the content, what strikes me about this edition, is the quality of the print, elegant graphics, paper and binding. This is progressively working it's way from 1st principles to the dynamic poetry of the music of the spheres. I'm currently playing my way through sacred geometry 2nd chapter but gagging to get ahead into music and cosmology, having to hold my horses to savour the journey and deepen comprehension Life affirming and awe inspiring.

Feb 27, Ashley Angel Megliorino rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: This book I first discovered in a community college library. Some 3 to 4 years later, I finally finished my own copy of this book, and I have never been happier to say that this book was worth the time it took to read, despite all the times I failed to read it in the first place. I recommend this book to all my friends. Sep 19, Yousra Nawara rated it did not like it.

Started reading this book Didn't understand shit! Ya'll be tripping this book is like reading absolute gibberish. May 01, Clint Joseph rated it liked it.

Really, I'd probably give this more of a 3. Wooden Books has some great, simple books like this that give you the main idea of things without bogging you down too terribly much.

Kind of like all those books you see for sale on the tables at Books A Million. I don't have a strong background in much of anything discussed here, so it doesn't get too terribly complex for somebody who isn't in the know, like myself. I think, to be fair, I read this companies books too quickly no chapter is o Really, I'd probably give this more of a 3. I think, to be fair, I read this companies books too quickly no chapter is over two pages and end up confusing myself, or just overloading my brain with things like music theory to the point it all gets mushed together.

So, the lower rating is probably partially my fault. These would be a good dip into subjects before you invest time in a longer study. Apr 23, Kenzie rated it really liked it Shelves: This book follows the classic liberal arts subjects of number, shape, cosmos, and music, and it shows how they all inform each other. It's beautiful, with text on the verso and image on the recto, however, because each spread is a new subject, the text was sometimes too abbreviated. It gives a good overview, but doesn't go in depth enough on anything.

It was a great introduction, and I'm interested in learning more. Jul 18, Austin Hoffman rated it really liked it Shelves: A wealth of information and wonder at the mysteries of the universe. This does not read like a standard book, but makes more sense as a kind of reference or encyclopedia.

There were many things way over my head, but I found it all interesting. The graphics and diagrams on every other page were delightful and well-done. This would be a good introduction to see what the quadrivium can be, but you would need another source to teach these arts. Feb 21, Mikel rated it liked it Shelves: I really like it as a reference book. However, many of the concepts are addressed too briefly one page per and are often described in a way that makes them sound more complicated than they are i.

I did download it because, as I said in the beginning, it acts as quick reference book.

It acts more as an outline or guide. Nov 28, Marco rated it it was ok. I liked the packaging; that was the first thing that caught my eyes. I also liked the images in it.

But, there is not much information offered. If a chapter picks your interest, you will have to research t somewhere else, on your own, since this book doesn't offer references.

For this I rated it a 2. Mar 04, Daniel Taylor rated it it was amazing Shelves: Almost all the answers can be found in this book.

They just need someone to synthesise the ideas and see the overall picture, the unifying force that permeates all four of these disciplines. Jan 07, Melissa rated it really liked it.

So much fun, so useful for homeschooling. Me love. Apr 02, Adam Balshan rated it liked it Shelves: The cover is arcane, spangled with glyphs and geometric diagrams on its black, almost square face. Its title represents the zenith of classical learning, which has undergone great diminution in the modern age, and towards which I strive, to buttress what I received from the crumbling edifice of Western education.

Further, the first book in its compendium was so exciting that I couldn't wait to digest more, reading even while carsick, and 3 stars [Science General ] I had high hopes for this book.

Further, the first book in its compendium was so exciting that I couldn't wait to digest more, reading even while carsick, and in a restaurant over Thanksgiving. However, the rest of the book was less magnificent. The two books on geometry were above average, but lacked the clarity and succinctness of the first, "Sacred Number.

The second book on music theory—The Elements of Music—mustered a disconnected attempt at conceptual interludes, which affected a slight improvement in my understanding. I daresay that I would have learned more from a Wikipedia entry, if one were to except the few useful entries on celestial periodic consonance. I recollect someone telling me that the Trivium and Quadrivium have been compiled elsewhere, as part of a K curriculum.

I shall look to that prospect rather than to this book for knowledge of the Quadrivium. I continue to esteem the classical arts, but I will use much of this manifestation of the Quadrivium in sparing reference only. Finally, and as a point of technicality , I list this book separate from its constituent six because there is extra material from a seventh book, and in the realm of coordinating references that exceeds those books alone.

Jan 08, Peter Mcloughlin rated it it was amazing Shelves: This book is an old favorite which looks at four of the original seven liberal arts of the classical world and the middle ages.

The four arts of the quadrivium are arithmetic study of number , Geometry the study of space , Music a time centered art , and finally astronomy which combines time, space and number. This book is new agey and can be flaky in places but even a hard edged skeptic like myself can overlook such indulgences for the beautiful gems found in this book.

It has some lovely This book is an old favorite which looks at four of the original seven liberal arts of the classical world and the middle ages. It has some lovely stuff on musical scales, the golden ration, some interesting ratios of the planets and epi-cycles of the now defunct Ptolemaic system, and some lovely mathematics including some great stuff on the platonic solids and the golden ratio. This is a good collection of odds and ends from some the ancient liberal arts.
