As the story is told from the point of view of a young, lonesome Japanese man, it digs deep into the Japanese psyche. Moving within these shifting boundaries, the novel explores some problems of modern Japanese society: young people coming of age, coping with American cultural inluence, disafection and disillusionment among all social classes, decadence born out of loneliness and daily monotony, unrequited love, abandonment, cruelty and pain, economic dominance and exploitation, combined with the search for human touch through the escape into a merciless world of drugs, crime and sexual exploitation.

He is observant, street-smart, speaks English, and has a 16 year-old girlfriend named Jun. In their desire to satisfy their vices, his clients request to be taken to special Karaoke bars, strip clubs, or brothels. On 29 December Kenji receives a call from a gaijin named Frank who requests his service for three consecutive nights.

At irst Frank seems to be just another lustful American tourist, yet Kenji quickly develops an eerie feeling that Frank is not as honest as his name suggests, that he has a hidden agenda. His facial skin looks like plastic. His eyes promise danger. Unnerving, is more like it.

He forces his captive to listen to the story of a troubled childhood that made him into the coldblooded murderer that he is today. On their third evening together the nightmare ends when Frank lets Kenji go free at the Sumida River.

Before doing so he explains that he came to Tokyo not least because he wanted to eat authentic miso soup but it was too late for that now: After Frank compares Tokyo with a bowl of miso soup and likens himself to an aimless element wandering in the middle of it, they separate and Kenji reunites with Jun.

She undermined his self- esteem by tying him up, beating and verbally abusing him until he was taken to a home for at-risk children. Now, in adult life, the traumatic childhood is breaking through.

In nerve-racking moments he feels watched by his mother, hears the voice of his alter-ego, and channels his confusion into a desire to pass on the pain to someone else. In the home for at-risk children Kawashima met many others who shared a similar fate.

For example, his friend Taku-chan loved pets but was only focused on himself and completely emotionless when he killed a rabbit. At the age of 17 Kawashima moved in with his irst girlfriend, a stripper and prostitute twice his age. It is from that pivotal moment on that his alter-ego advises him on his actions. As a way of protecting his newborn daughter, escaping the cycle of fear and overcoming his sadistic urges, Kawashima is convinced that he must leave the sheltered family home and kill someone.

His supervisor assumes that Kawashima only wants a break from his wife and teases him not to become infected with AIDS while away. He writes down pages of details; thus, he considers his disguise, the location, the murder weapon, people who might see him before and after the killing, and other factors such as a fake name and accent, avoiding ingerprints by wearing gloves, and that he would have to immediately abort the mission if something went wrong.

But who should be his target? Among the advantages of choosing such a woman was the fact that any search for her would be half-hearted at best, since she was unlikely even to be in Japan legally.

But it was essential that the lesh he pierced with the ice-pick be as white as possible. And now that he thought about it, not even a fair-skinned foreigner would do.

However, for the sake of advancing the plot at a quick pace Murakami only hints at such broader issues and does not develop them or intrude with authorial comment. He decides that a white-skinned Japanese woman employed by a service that caters to customers interested in sado-masochism is the best choice, and that the place to murder her should be a love hotel in another part of Tokyo.

He intends to cut her Achilles tendons irst in order to hear a sound supposedly as loud as a gunshot — he has read this in a magazine — before stabbing an ice pick in her belly. Suddenly he is aching for the company of an older woman — or for motherly love?

It was only natural to hate such kids, to ignore them and shower only your other children with love. Children are powerless, Kawashima muttered to himself. In efect his wife and child are the personiications of his typical male fears about commitment. Is this the reason why he wants to stab a woman in her belly — to simulate an act of abortion? Sanada is awakened when the secretary of her agency calls her to attend to a new client.
