Paperback Verified download. This is a great book giving lots of calculator practice in problem solving! This book presents a summary of the basic ideas of electromagnetics. Its mathematical explanations are very brief, however, giving fundamental equations without a lot of detail.
It is not a "stand alone" book but definitely should be treated as a supplementary source used in conjunction with a more traditional textbook. The big attraction for using this book alongside a traditional textbook is that there are a ton of solved exercises illustrating the concepts at the end of each chapter. These are great to try without looking at the solutions unless absolutely necessary.
Additional supplementary problems are also given and useful to try where the answers are shown but solutions are not shown. I worked thru the first 14 of the book's 17 chapters. The book's author is an electrical engineer so the book takes an Electrical Engineering slant in places. This distracted me at first since I prefer a "pure physics" approach.
For example, alternating current rather than steady current is used in the book's initial equations in chapter 1. After chapter 1 the book switches into steady current for most of the topics. Aspects of Electrical Engineering resurface in chapter 7 again when the author works with AWG numbers, diameters given in "mils", cross-sectional areas in "circular mils", etc Alternating current ideas rather than constant current are injected briefly without warning in chapter 13 when the author begins to deal with Maxwell's Equations.
I found some definitions in this book are slightly different from what you would find in a traditional physics textbook. For example, in this book "H" is defined as the "Magnetic Field Strength" and "B" is defined as the "Magnetic Flux Density" whereas in most traditional physics electrodynamics textbooks "B" is defined as the "Magnetic Field Strength".
See Griffith's amusing comments about these terms and the "absurd" choice of calling "B" the "Magnetic Flux Density" on p of his book "Introduction To Electrodynamics" 3rd Ed. This book also has a large section on magnetic circuits in chapter 12 after introducing inductance. I found this to be something I had not encountered before in any other book.
It would have been nice to have had more of Faraday's Law applied to regular electrical current circuits and devices at this point. Occasional obvious errors were found throughout the book.
