Open School philosophy places a strong emphasis on individualized personal learning plans, an advisor system, student-designed projects, and many off-campus trips. School is run democratically, by the students; governance of the school is a major venue for learning. Got the impression that students actively support each other as they learn and grow together this kind of positive, mutually-supporting culture is rarely present in American high schools.

A couple reservations re the author's methodology - 1st, the school is pre-K but the book seems to focus mostly on the high school. My evaluation - this book got me thinking about the basic issue of what school, especially at the secondary level, ought to be about.

The answer should be, preparing students for life. And who is accountable to the individual student? Rick Posner has written an extensive account of the history, structure and success of Jefferson County Open School, which has been in existence for 40 years.

In this book, he documents why the environment of a school is more important than the rigid and unrelenting structure of class periods, grades, credits and assignments that have no real connection to a student's own life. Near the beginning of the book, the author refers to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, where it is apparent that someone who is in an unsafe environment is unlikely to be successful because their basic needs have not been met, as is the case for many students in high school.

He writes about the structure of the school Contrary to misconceived beliefs, the school does have a structure - it isn't a free floating unstructured school. There's more I'd like to mention, such as school trips, which were my key to success, but my review would be too long.

The way the school is set up allows all students to have a stake in the learning process. A stake in the learning process something that is mysteriously absent from most public schools, yet is sorely needed for students who could do so much more with their lives than just getting by. Also, the author writes extensively about the success of so many students over the years for which JCOS meant so much to them well into their adult lives.

This book should serve as a testament to what school should be for everyone in the 21st century. The students in this book reflect experiences at an age that most people have to wait to get, and understand only after they have "moved on" from the 'usual' school. They did what every young person in America ought to be able to do.

It's heartening to know there are still some sane minds out there on the subject of education. Posner is surely one of them. He inserts his own personality gently, letting the students hum and strum on their own much of the time. His writing is clear and to the point. The academicians need to re-think our entire public school system. I applaud Dr.

Posner for his efforts in presenting us with the inspiring example offered us by this Jefferson County, Colorado public school. Hopefully, it will serve to inject some fresh thinking into the dismal sounding debates over the future of education in this nation.

I might add that the book is a pleasure to read. This is not 'for educators only'.
