I was a bit saddened that my dear Karin Miyyan was only an NPC at first, but you did a great job involving these other team members, so that was soon healed. It felt longer than those 25 pages, to be honest, but that's maybe the episodic structure. I do wonder whether this episodic structure maybe works better in ftf than in pbf, but that probably is a question for the players to answer. But Abe, seriously, you are one of the Lords of RPGGeek, one who starts and finishes campaigns - while I appreciate the sentiment, trust me, nobody who plays with you could demand that you get better at running games. It's been a long time since I've handled so many NPCs at once, it was really challenging! True, there is a lot of total party kill potential in this one; it's a good thing that there is significant advice on the book telling you how to handle character deaths "if 'A' character has died, do this or that, etc. However, I did add a few objectives here and there, otherwise, the battles would just feel like a "kill all enemies, again, and again" sort of thing.
Most of the trouble comes from the comprehensive mecha-building system. You've got to police your players a fair bit don't let them build the mecha equivalent of Pun-Pun and not get overwhelmed by the clunky math involved.
The good news! I found that, after slaving over mecha-creation for so long, the actual gameplay was refreshingly easier. It's really not much more complicated than DnD in terms of play. It's a hex-based system where facing matters takes a bit of getting used to.
All combat rolls are oppositional rather than based on static defenses, so it feels a bit more active. The system is particularly lethal, as well.
Combat can be over in a few rounds if a player is not careful. A stray powerplant hit can end instantly. The same goes for NPCs, so I would call it rather "swingy". This is excellent for a kill-em-all game like something in the style of Zeta Gundam , but it is most definitely not for everyone.
That may be a turn-off for some people, but thankfully there are optional rules in the book to somewhat blunt or sharpen the level of lethality. Character gen was also very fun. I highly recommend rolling for your background on the life-path tables.
The game freely-embraces mecha anime tropes, and the Lifepath system follows suit. The book has a very wink-wink nudge-nudge referential style regarding several popular mecha anime franchises. Once again, I think there are some golden nuggets in this book.
I certainly had a lot of fun with it. But it is most definitely not for everyone.
Those of you who are interested, this may be the way to go. Present expected release is sometime next month. Last minute delays in art and print layout are primarily what's left. And, unlike the old Mekton editions, it will be a full-cover hardbound book thanks to the positive reponse to the Kickstarter. Time will tell if it will actually assuage major criticism of the Zeta edition, but I have a good feeling about Mekton Zero.
